Ginger is probably best known for helping nausea but it has so many diverse benefits and adds phenomenal flavor to many dishes. Ginger has a very pungent flavor but can be added to foods in varying amounts depending on the degree of flavor intensity desired. Native to India, it is now also grown in Indonesia and China. Used throughout the world, ginger use dates back to ancient Greek and Roman times. It is used extensively in traditional Chinese medicine for digestive problems and yang deficiency - a deficiency of the warming energy of the body. Oils and Broth for Cooking

I frequently get asked the question…what’s the best oil to cook with? The answer often surprises. An unofficial survey typically yields the answer of “olive oil”. Contrary to this popular belief, olive oil is not the best oil to cook with. It’s an amazing oil for salad dressings but the heat, particular direct, stove top heat, is too high for olive oil, especially extra virgin olive oil. Anything on the stove top above medium heat can breakdown olive oil and cause a loss in some of the benefits. Oven cooking, or indirect cooking is safe, but if you’re using it on the stove over a medium heat, choose a different oil. Just a few excellent oils that can better withstand higher temperatures on t

Managing Seasonal Allergies with Nutrition

So you might ask what do seasonal allergies have to do with nutrition? As it turns out, a great deal. About 25 years ago I was plagued with horrific seasonal and environmental allergies. All types of pollen, mold, dust, and also dogs and cats. So basically everything outside except the oxygen… and there were days that I wondered about that too. I was on every allergy medication known to man and was getting sicker and sicker. Along with the underlying allergies, I had allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, dysfunctional Eustachian tubes, and mild asthma. My immune system was basically dysfunctional and I was a mess. One of my doctors wanted to break my nose and Roto-Rooter my sinuses as a temp

Turmeric

Turmeric is truly a powerhouse. I add it to everything I possibly can. It’s that important!! The active component of turmeric is curcumin. You may see this indicated in supplement forms of turmeric. It is the curcumin, turmeric’s yellow pigment, that is responsible for one of turmeric’s most significant benefits as an anti-inflammatory. It has been shown to be as effective as some NSAID’s and cortisone, without the side effects. Curcumin is also has powerful antioxidant properties responsible for the reduction of free radical in the body. Among its other benefits are: Anti-cancer: Inhibits the formation of nitrosamines – from processed and grilled meats – and promotes liver detoxification of

Choosing Herbs & Spices

Herbs and spices are an excellent way to add favor to just about any dish. What many don’t realize is that there are a multitude of health benefits to herbs and spices. First, however, in this posting I’d like to speak to how to choose the best ones. There has been so much concern over content and processing for some years I’ve actually seen some individuals not use these wonderful flavors due to concern over their quality. There is just one simple rule to consider, first and foremost, when purchasing spices and herbs…buy organic. Plain and simple. This rule covers the most important selection priorities. Concern over the addition of MSG – monosodium glutamate – is high and with good reason.
