Immune Boosting Tonic

    

 

Ingredients:

1½ cups water

1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (with mother)

1 tbsp lemon juice

½ tsp ground ginger or 1 tsp ginger juice*

¼ tsp ground turmeric

1 tsp Manuka honey or a raw, unfiltered honey

 

Instructions:

  1. Add ingredients except water to a mug.

  2. Pour in 1½ cups of just warm (not hot or boiling) water and stir well.

  3. Add more water to dilute if taste is too strong.

 

* To make ginger juice, grate about 1+ tbsp of fresh ginger root and squeeze into a small bowl. Measure 1 teaspoon and add to mug.

 

 

 

Ingredient Benefits:

Apple cider vinegar – ACV is the basis for this tonic as it helps boost immune function. Because it is fermented, it is rich in prebiotics and beneficial probiotic bacteria that can have a profoundly positive impact on immune system health. It has been shown to have both antioxidant and antibacterial properties and there is some evidence of its antiviral properties. As a potent detoxifier it helps rid the body of the “bad bugs” and cleanse the liver. ACV alkalizes the body which supports a healthy body by normalizing pH. The “Mother” is important as it has been found to contain health-promoting natural protein, probiotic bacteria and acetic acid.

Lemon juice – Like ACV, lemon has the effect of alkalizing the body. Additionally, lemon juice is high in vitamin C, an antioxidant which boosts the immune system and also has anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial properties.

Ginger – Antiinflammatory and extremely healing and comforting to the digestive tract where 70% of your immune system resides.

Turmeric – The active compound in turmeric – curcumin – has shown its enormous power to heal as a potent anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial and antioxidant. That’s a lot of “antis” but all good stuff!

Manuka honey – Of all the types of honey, Manuka honey contains the highest levels of methylgloxal – the compound responsible for its anti-bacterial properties. Manuka honey has been found to stimulate the production of cytokines – which are chemical messengers secreted by your immune cells to regulate immune responses.

 

Use these ingredients in your kitchen every day. Think salad dressing, soups, on sauteed or roasted vegetables...yum!
